Computer Security Help

Nowadays most wireless router is a plug and play method which is simply plug in and start using the wireless internet without thinking about security. Actually someone can get access to your wireless internet without your knowledge and maybe one of the reason your wireless internet connection getting slower.

You can try to apply this step to protect your wireless internet:

1. Changes your wireless router administration username and password
- To log into wireless router and modify any configuration settings, you need to key in the username and password. It is better to change this username and password because mostly default username and password are so weak. Example mostly username being used is ‘admin’ and password is ‘password’ or ‘admin’

2. Don’t broadcast your SSID
- SSID (Service Set IDentifier) also known as network’s name. Your network will invisible to your neighbors and others people if you turning off SSID broadcast.

3. Enable WPA encryption instead of WEP
- If you enable WPA encryption you need to create a password. The password characters in WPA aren’t limited to 0-9 and A-F.

4. Use MAC filtering
- This option need you to put into your wireless router the specific MAC address on Computer you know about and will using the wireless internet.
- The MAC addr for your wireless card can be found by clicking “Start”, click “Run”, and type “cmd” into the command line. once you get a black command box (looks like an old DOS prompt), type in the following: ipconfig /all
look for the ‘physical address’ of the wireless adapter. it will look like : 00:1b:90:c6:88:aa or something similar. Put in that address in your routers MAC list, and you should be set

5. Reduce your wireless router transmitter power
- Not all wireless router have this option. By lowering the transmitter power you can make sure your wireless internet coverage is only inside your house. The contra about this is you need to trial-and-error to find the better signal which is cover only in your house and not getting a weak signal.

6. Disable remote administration
- If you not disable this feature almost anyone anywhere could potentially find and access your router via the internet.
