Below is step by step how you can change monitor resolution
1. Click ‘Start’ then select ‘Control Panel’ then click on ‘Display’
2. Click on ‘Settings’ tab
3. Adjust the resolution under ‘screen area’
Most graphic card support resolution minimum 800×600 and maximum 1024×768, only high speed and high memory graphic card support higher resolution.
4. Click the ‘Apply’ button first to test new setting and then click ‘Ok’

Actually you can hide computer monitor resolution that the monitor cannot display properly. At ‘Display Properties’ click on ‘Advanced’ then click on ‘Monitor’ after that thick on option ‘hide modes that this monitor cannot display’. By doing this you can hide unusable monitor resolution and prevent from hardware damaged.
